Stay Safe Around Animals!

Thank you to the Stratford Perth Humane Society for visiting us today with 'Penny' - a beautiful, calm Golden Retriever.  We learned how animals talk to people and were reminded to look at teeth, eyes (angry stare) and flattened ears to tell if an animal is angry and may hurt us!  We also learned some valuable information about how to behave around dogs.

Here are some tips:
Never approach a dog that you don't know- leave it alone.
We learned that we should always ask an owner if we can touch their dog.
When touching a dog, curl your fingers underneath so that the animal can't bite fingers.
Stand beside the dog and let it sniff you.
Stroke the chin, chest or back.....NEVER the head.

We learned what to do when we encounter a dog that is jumping up on us - cross your hands and turn your back to the dog...say "enough".

If you encounter an angry dog - stand up straight and still - like a tree.
If a dog knocks you down - protect yourself by curling up in a ball like a rock with your hands behind your neck  - like a rock!

If the dog won't leave you alone - give it your backpack, a shoe, a coat or anything that it can chew on instead of you!

Stay safe around animals everyone!
